MS SQL Server.

Microsoft SQL Server is a relational database management system (RDBMS) and utilises Transact-SQL to perform its standard queries.  Transact-SQL is an implementation of the Structured Query Language (SQL) used by both MS SQL Server and Sybase ASA/ ASE.  MS SQL Server started its life like so many of Microsoft's products by belonging to someone else and exclusive rights to market the product as SQL Server were obtained.  SQL Server is in fact a port of Sybase and its code-base prior to SQL 7 originates from Sybase.  There have been a number of versions of SQL Server:

  • 1993 - SQL Server 4.21
  • 1995 - SQL Server 6.0
  • 1996 - SQL Server 6.5
  • 1999 - SQL Server 7.0
  • 1999 - SQL Server 7.0 OLAP
  • 2000 - SQL Server 2000 32-bit, (version 8.0)
  • 2003 - SQL Server 2000 64-bit.
  • 2005 - SQL Server 2005, (version 9.0)
